一.阅读:

I arrived in the United States on February 6,1966, but I remember my first day here very clearly. My friend was waiting for me when my plane landed at Kennedy Airport at three o’clock in the afternoon. The weather was very cold and it was snowing, but I was too excited to mind. From the airport, my friend and I took a taxi to my hotel. On the way, I saw the skyline(轮廓) of Manhattan(曼哈顿) for the first time and I stared in astonishment at the famous skyscrapers and their man-made beauty. My friend helped me unpack at the hotel and then left me because he had to go back to work. He promised to return the next day.

Shortly after my friend had left, I went to a restaurant near the hotel to get something to eat. Because I couldn’t speak a word of English, I couldn’t tell the waiter what I wanted. I was very upset and started to make some gestures(手势), but the waiter didn’t understand me. Finally, I ordered the same thing the man at the next table was eating. After dinner, I started to walk along Broadway until I came to Times Square with its movie theatres, neon lights(霓虹灯), and huge crowds of people. I did not feel tired, so I continued to talk around the city. I wanted to see everything on my first day. I knew it was impossible, but I wanted to try.

When I returned to the hotel, I was exhausted(筋疲力尽), but I couldn’t sleep because I kept hearing the fire and police sirens(警笛声) during the night. I lay awake and thought about New York. 第二部分、阅读理解

1、选择题

At some time in your life you may have a strong desire to do something strange or terrible. However, chances are that you don't act on your impulse(冲动), but let it pass instead. You know that to commit the action is wrong in some way and that other people will not accept your behavior.Perhaps the most interesting thing about the phenomenon of taboo(禁忌的) behavior is how it can change over the years within the same society, how certain behavior and attitudes once considered taboo can become perfectly acceptable and natural at another point in time. One of the newest taboos in American society is the topic of fat. Unlike many other taboos, fat is a topic that Americans talk about constantly. It's not taboo to talk about fat; it's taboo to be fat. The "in" look is thin, not fat. In the work world, most companies prefer youthful-looking, thin(苗条) executives(经理) to sell their image as well as their products to the public. The fat person, on the other hand, is thought of as lazy and lacking in energy, self-discipline, and self-respect. After all, people think, how can people who care about themselves, and therefore the way they look, permit themselves to become fat? In an image-conscious society like the U. S. , thin is "in", fat is "out".

1. From the passage ,we knom that taboo is .

A. a strong desire to do something strange or terrible

B. a crime committed on impulse

C. behavior considered unacceptable in society's eyes

D. an unfavorable impression left on other people

2.Based on the ideas presented in the passage we can conclude "being fat"_______ in American society.

A. will always remain a taboo B. is no longer a taboo any more

C. has long been a taboo D. has not been considered a taboo by most people

3.The topic of fat is_______many other taboo subjects.

A. the same as B. more popular than

C. different from D. less often talked about than

4. The word "in", fat is "out" mean_______.

A. thin is "inside", fat is "outside"

B. thin is "diligent", fat is "lazy"

C. thin is "beginning", fat is "ending"

D. thin is "fashionable", fat is "unfashionable"

5.The expression image-conscious society can be replaced by_______.

A. fast-developing society which is built on a clear image

B. the society in which image has been attached importance to

C. the society whose image has been reined becaused of money

D. very imaginative society with nice appearance

2、判断对错

On average, American kids aged 3 to 12 spend 29 hours a week in school, eight hours more than they did in 1981. They also did more household work and participated in more of such organized activities as soccer and ballet (芭蕾舞). Involvement in sports, in particular, rose almost 50% from 1981 to 1997: boys now spend an average of four hours a week playing sports; girls log hall that time. All in all, however, children‟s leisure time dropped from 40% of the day in 1981 to 25%

“Children are affected by the same crunch (危机) that affects their parents,” says Sandra Hofferth, who headed the recent study of children‟s timetable. A chief reason, she says, is that more mothers are working outside the home. (Nevertheless, children in both double-income and “male breadwinner” households spent comparable amounts of time interacting with their parents 19 hours and 22 hours respectively. In contrast, children spent only 9 hours with their single mothers.)

All work and no play could make for some very messed-up kids. “Play is the most powerful way a child explores the world and learns about himself,” says T. Berry Brazelton, professor at Harvard Medical School Unstructured play encourages independent thinking and allows the young to negotiate their relationships with their peers, but kids ages 3 to 12 spent only 12 hours a

week engaged in it.

The children sampled spent a quarter of their rapidly decreasing “free time” watching television. But that, believe it or not, was one of the findings parents might regard as good news. If they‟re spending less time in front of the TV set, however, kids aren‟t replacing it with reading. Despite efforts to get kids more interested in books, the children spent just over an hour a week reading. Let‟s face it, who‟s got the time?

1. The reason given by Sandra Hofferth for the time crunch is partially true.( )

2. A child develops better if he has more time participating in school activities. ( )

3. The auther is concerned about the fact that American kids are engaged in more and more structured activities. ( )

4. Most children will turn to reading with TV sets switched off. ( )

5. Sandra Hofferth means children have little time to play with their parents. ( )

Global Warming

Global warming may or may not be the great environmental crisis of the 21st century, but — regardless of whether it is or isn‟t — we won‟t do much about it. We will argue over it and may even, as a nation, make some fairly solemn-

sounding commitments to avoid it. But the more dramatic and meaningful these commitments seem, the less likely they are to be observed.

A1 Gore calls global warming an “inconvenient truth”, as if merely

recognizing it could put us on a path to a solution. But the real truth is that we

don‟t know enough to relieve global warming, and — without major technological breakthroughs — we can‟t do much about it.

From 2003 to 2050, the world‟s population is predicted to grow from 6.4

billion to 9.1 billion, a 42% increase. If energy use per person and technology remain the same, total energy use and greenhouse gas emissions (mainly, CO2) will be 42% higher in 2050.But that‟s too low, because societies that grow richer use more energy. We need economic growth unless we leave the world‟s poor to their present poverty and freeze everyone else‟s living standards. With modest growth, energy use and greenhouse emissions will more than double by 2050.

No government will adopt strict restrictions on economic growth and personal freedom (limits on electricity usage, driving and travel) that might cut back global warming. Still, politicians want to show they‟re “doing something” Consider the Kyoto Protocol. It allowed countries that joined to punish those that didn‟t. But it hasn‟t reduced CO2 emissions (up about 25% since 1990), and many signatories didn‟t adopt tough enough policies to hit their 2008-2012 targets.

The practical conclusion is that if global warming is a potential disaster, the only solution is new technology. Only an aggressive research and development program might find ways of breaking our dependence on fossil fuels or dealing with it.

The trouble with the global warming debate is that it has become a moral

problem when it‟s really an engineering one. The inconvenient truth is that if we don‟t solve the engineering problem, we‟re helpless.

Dieting to lose weight has become very popular in recent years. People have become more health conscious and try to take better care of their bodies by eating more nutritiously(有营养) and exercising more regularly to lose any unnecessary fat that they may have.

Not only are people being more careful about what they eat, they are also concerned with how they eat and how their meals are prepared. People are taking more time for each meal. Many avoid the so-called " plastic " fast-food hamburgers and choose to eat a salad or a sandwich of more healthful ingredients(成分) in a quiet restaurant with a more leisurely atmosphere. At home, they also try to take enough time to eat a relaxed dinner without phone or TV interruptions.

While dieting may be viewed as beneficial, it has also become a serious problem for Americans, particularly for young women. Dieting for them has actually become a psychological addiction(依赖). They eat so little that they can lose as much as fifty percent of their total body weight, and although they look like skeletons, they still insist that they are fat.

The current wave of exercising, dieting and the problems produced have caused many organizations to begin educating the public. Many schools, hospitals, health organizations, newspapers and magazines, for example, are offering classes, printing booklet

articles, etc. to inform the public of the way to exercise and diet, of the dangers of dieting too rapidly, and of the places people can go for medical help if they find themselves on the road to "diet addiction".

得 2 分,满分 2 分 By definition, heroes and heroines are men and women distinguished by

uncommon courage, achievements, and self-sacrifice made most for the benefits of others----they are people against whom we measure others. They are men and women recognized for shaping our nation's consciousness and development as well as the lives of those who admire them. Yet, some people say that ours is an age where true heroes and heroines are hard to come by, where the very idea of heroism is something beyond us----an artifact of the past. Some maintain, that because the Cold War is over and because America is at peace, our age is essentially an unheroic one. Furthermore, the overall crime rate is down, poverty has been eased by a strong and growing economy, and advances continue to be made in medical science.{专升本大学英语(一)第3次作业}.
