Unit2 Passage3
Confident Body Language for the Woman of Today
The woman of today is experiencing a time. More women are taking leading roles both in the workplace and in the world in general. Unfortunately many competent (有能力的) women are not being recognized because of their weak body language. Because of this, today’s woman can benefit from learning how to move her body with confidence, and send confident signals via the art of non-verbal (非口头) communcation.
Pauline Fredericke said,“When a man gets up to speak, people listen, then look. When a woman gets up, people look; then, if they like what they see, they listen.”
And let’s be honest there is some truth in her statement, which puts greater pressure on women who want to prone themselves, and take up positions in the work force. They want to say, “I am strong and confident, not weak and nervous”.
Women are more likely to use body language that suggests they are uncertain even if they do happen to be an expert in their chosen field. Certain body language can possibly put a well-educated and competent woman in a weak and insecure situation.
For example, if you are a woman waiting to make a presentation (报告) before an audience, keep in mind that you are be seen even whilst
waiting your turn。 So be sure not to let your first impression be one of showing nervous mannerisms (小动作) (such as constantly flipping notes) or keeping your head down and eyes to the ground. So in this case, your body language has given you away that you are absolutely not confidence.
So how can modern women show more confidence through unspoken words? Here are some time tested tips.
Posture (姿态)
The way a woman stands, or sits, can tell much about how she’s feeling. If she wants others to believe that she’s confidence and capable, she can take a strong posture.
When standing or seated, a woman can imagine a pole, reaching down her spine(脊柱), up against which her back rests . This will help her to straighten her back.. By imagining also, that there is an unseen string at the top of her head, holding her head upwards, she will keep her head and neck straight.
Stance (站姿)
As well as having a good posture, a woman can stand confidently by being aware of her body language. When standing, she can make sure that her feet point towards who she is talking to, as this will help her to focus and keep her mind on the conversation at hand. She can also move her hands and arms with confidence, by avoiding fast, strange movements,
and by sticking to slow, calm movements and gestures instead. Facial Language
A confident woman will not be afraid to look other people in the eye. This is very important if she wants to capture someone’s attention, and let them see that she’s to be taken seriously.
Confident women will smile, but not laugh nervously. They are also able to control their facial movements, rather than reacting with a look of fear or surprise, even when being told about an emergency issue that needs to be dealt with. Calm and refined facial gestures indicate confidence, whereas twisting (扭曲的) face and biting her inner lip definitely send the message that she’s nervous, and lacking confindence. Gestures
We all use gestures regularly, but the key to using them confidently and wisely, is to be aware of them, and in charge. Gestures like constantly flicking (轻拂) hair back, or licking lips, are OK for romance, but not acceptable for business if you want to be taken seriously.
The women of today need to understand which gestures are best used at particular times. They can learn how to perform such gestures by studying film clips of politicians giving speeches. Politicians are coached by professionals about how to use gestures to get their message across, and to encourage passion and confidence in listeners. For instance, when you want to make a point people will remember, you may use a cutting
movement with your forearm. Another gesture of confidence is to regard everyone in the room by sweeping the room with your sight. This makes everyone feel included.
In short, a woman with strong body language sits straight, listens attentively to others, places feet comfortably on the floor or crossed, examines the audience to find potential problems with line of sight or hearing, looks relaxed, smiles as is appropriate and appears to be enjoying herself. And the confident body language for the woman of today is an art that can be taught and learned.

e.g: - Do you think I can use your car for one day?
A. I’m afraid not. B. No, you can’t.
C. I won’t let you do that. D. Absolutely not.
因此选A。
I’d like/ love to, but…
That’s a good idea, but…
e.g: - I am going to the City Hall, can you tell me how to get there, madam?
- A. No, you don’t know
B. I don’t know.
C. Yes, you will.
D. Sorry, I am new here too. But you can ask the policeman over there.
e.g: - Mary, your dress is really beautiful. How is John?
-
A. Thank you very much B. No, no, John is not bad
C. Thank you. He is fine D. Don’t say that. It’s ugly. John is good
交际用语部分试题的选项中,错误选项不但错得比较明显,而且有一定规律可循,这为解题时使用排除法提供了机会。错项的类型大体有几类:A. 选项本身语法错误;B.选项议题与谈话主题无关;C.选项明显违反上述三原则;D. 选项虽然与谈话主题有关,但不能提供发问者要求的信息、态度或观点;
e.g:
1)- Mary, are you and your husband busy this weekend?
A. this weekend we may go to cinema B. No, we’re not
C. Oh, it’s none of your business D. Welcome to our party
2)- You are not the manager here, are you?
-
A. Yes, I’m not B. No, I am C. Yes, I am D. No, not at all
