In Picture One, some students are waiting in line to get lunch in the school dining hall. In Picture Two, a student is cutting in line.

I don’t think cutting in line is right. On the one hand, it is unfair to others. Those who cut in line may say they are in a hurry but everyone’s time is valuable. 1

So being too hungry or being in a hurry can’t be used as a reason for such a bad manner. On the other hand, if one student succeeds in cutting in line, others would do that again. If that happens, there would be no rules in the school. So the student in Picture Two should wait in line for lunch.

Dear Maria

How’s everything going?

I’d like to tell you something about my hobby. I like reading very much. When I was a little child, my parents told me a lot about books. At the age of four, they began to give me something easy to read. After I entered primary school, my teacher taught me how to read. Since then I decided to read more. I’ve had great fun reading. I feel relaxed while reading and it really makes me happy. Best wishes!

In the UK, most children have their lunches at school, but in some schools, parents can choose what their children eat. The children can have a school dinner — a hot, cooked meal; or they can take a packed (包装的)lunch with them, which usually includes cold food like sandwiches.

Often parents know what their children want. Cath, a mother of three children, told us, “My children have packed lunches because they say they hate school dinners. So I make three packed lunches every morning.”

However, another mother, Susan, made a different choice. She said, “My daughters have always had school dinners. I think they probably get healthier food at school than a few sandwiches I make of them.”

But hoe healthy are school dinners? Kaz, a father, thought poorly of them. He said, “Fizzy (起泡的) drinks were offered and I think there were lot of chips.”

Jamie Oliver spent a year working in a school kitchen. He was worried about the unhealthy food which included burgers, pizzas and chips. So he tried to cook healthy food such as good stews and curries for the children instead.

So Janie improved the school dinners, and trained the dinner ladies to cook healthy food in that school. Then he advised the government to improve school food across the country. And it seems that the changes have begun.

Anna, a pupil, told us, “we used to have a fast food window where you got chips and coke,

but they stopped that this year. There’s salad restaurant, which is good, so it’s healthier than it was.”

Benjamin Banneker was born a few months before another great

American—George Washington. Benjamin was black, but he was

not a slave. He and his mother and his grandmother were free.

Benjamin’s grandmother came from England. In America she got

a job and worked for many years to pay for her boat trip across

the ocean . After working many more years, she saved enough

money to buy a farm. Benjamin lived with her for a while. She

taught him to read and write and do arithmetic (算术).

Benjamin’s neighbour knew that he was clever. They were

not surprised when he built a large wooden clock. He made each

piece after studying a small pocket watch. The clock made him

famous, for it was one of the first clocks built in America. People from other places began to send hard problems of all kinds for Benjamin to settle.

Thomas Jefferson learned of Benjamin Banneker’s ability to settle hard problems. He asked Banneker to help build the city that was to be the capital of the United States—Washington,

D.C. Banneker worked hard on the plans for the city. He marked where the streets and buildings—the Capitol (美国国会大厦) the White House, and many others—should be built.

Later, L’ Enfant, the Frenchman who had designed the new city, had a quarrel, and went back to France in anger. He took all of the plans with him. The workmen couldn’t build without any plans to follow.

For a while it seemed that the plans for the capital might have to be changed, but Benjamin Banneker remembered the plans he had helped draw. He drew each again as he had built each piece of his clock.

If it weren’t for Benjamin Banneker, Washington, D.C might look very different from the way it does today.

Every year on my birthday, from the time I turned 12, a white gardenia

(栀子花) was delivered to my house. No card ever came with it. Calls to the

flower-shop were not helpful at all. After a while I stopped trying to find out

the sender’s name and was just pleased with the beautiful white flower, in

soft pink paper.

I never stopped imagining (想象) who the giver might be, though.

Some of my happiest moments were spent daydreaming about the sender. My mother encouraged these daydreams. She’d ask me if I had been especially kind to someone. Perhaps it was one of my classmates. Perhaps it was the old man. He lived across the street. I’d delivered his mail during the winter. As a girl, though, I had more fun imagining that it might be a boy that I had met.

One month before my high school graduation, my father died. I was so sad that I became completely uninterested in my upcoming graduation dance, and I didn’t care whether I had a new dress or not. My mother, in her own sadness, however, would not let me miss any of those things. She wanted her children to feel loved. In fact, my mother wanted her children to see themselves much like the gardenia: lovely, strong and perfect, with perhaps a bit of mystery (神秘).

I got married at the age of 22. My mother died ten years after I was married. That was the year the gardenia stopped coming.

Following are opinions on the manner (举止) that people in the United States usually expect in various social situations.

Men usually shake hands with each other when they meet for the first time, but shake hands with women only if the woman extends her hand first. Women do not usually shake hands with each other.

After the first meeting, shaking hands is unusual. However, if someone offers his or her hand by chance, one is expected to shake it. In general, people in the United States avoid (避免) physical touch with each other, since physical touch often suggests sexual attraction or attack.

Although, it has been noted, first names are used more often in the United States than elsewhere, this practice is generally accepted by the rules of etiquette(礼仪). Thus, while it is proper for the foreign student to身份) by their first name, the student would be expected to use ―Mr.‖, ―Mrs.‖, ―Miss‖ or ―Ms.‖ and the person’s last name in addressing to another person who is clearly older than the student. (On the other hand, the old person will probably address the student by his or her first name from the beginning.) If t
