First, the professor argues in the lecture that the fire enhanced the diversity of vegetation in Yellowstone Park, even though the reading passage suggests that Yellowstone fires caused tremendous damage to the park's trees and other vegetation. This is because that the fire has created a opportunity for some new plants to grow, for instance, the small plants which needed open un-shaded area and the seeds which demanded high levels of heat to germinate, which means that the small vegetations would had a better environment after the large trees had been destroyed. Obviously, the professor's argument disproves its counterpart in the reading.

Moreover, despite the statement in the reading that the park wildlife was affected, and there was also concern that the destruction of habitats and food chains, the professor states that the fire also created new opportunities for some animals’ thriving that the population could recover and strengthened certain food chains. According to the reading material, three reasons are given to prove the fact that utilizing genetic modification method, which is a way of changing genes and characteristics of some plants, will bring lots of benefits. However, in the lecture, the professor illustrates three distinct points to provide her own point of view, which is opposed to what is stated in the reading.

First of all, the writer thinks that using the genetic modification method can make trees hardier than before so that they will be more likely to survive by resisting some virus. In contrast, the speaker believes that even though those trees are resistant to virus or other problems, the trees grow in the new method are uniformed, which means they can only resist certain types of virus. In that case, new trees will not able to survive in some particular climate changes and new pesticides.

Secondly, the passage raised the issue that this type of tree can grow faster and bring more fruits for farmers, so they will get more return and use less pesticide. However, the professor thinks genetic modification has hidden cost,

because seeds become more expensive. More importantly, farmers cannot get free seeds in this process, they have to buy them every time they plant.

Finally, the reading claims this new method will reduce the rate of overexploitation of wild trees because more and more timber are needed today, only by using genetic modification can those timber companies satisfy those needs and thus saving endangered native trees efficiently. This point contradicts what is stated in the lecture. The speaker demonstrated that this method will in fact bring damage to native trees because they grow so aggressively that they out compete the resources of other trees, as a result, the native trees are more likely to extinct than before.
